*Check out my YouTube video on how to take CBD Oil for beginners here.*

Maybe this is your first bottle of CBD Oil or you’ve been using it for a few months, but you aren’t certain on the best way to incorporate it into your lifestyle.

First off, yay! (Also, click here to check out our craft hemp goodness, if you haven’t yet.)

Second, by the end of this short read, you’ll know a good baseline dosage to help you incorporate Full Spectrum CBD oil into your life.

As always, we advise you speak with your healthcare provider regarding these products.  The following information are our findings from being both hemp growers and processors.

Being your own advocate and educating yourself are two principals I heavily push on the cusp of this exciting Hemp Movement.

So, let’s dive in.

Getting Started – How Much to Take

15mg to 25mg of CBD once or twice a day is what we suggest our customers begin taking.  Tincture is dropped sublingually (Under the tongue) and held for 45 seconds to a minute before swallowing.

During this time, while you are determining your “Sweet Spot” for CBD, I suggest taking it an hour before bed.

This allows time to feel the results of that dosage and if you are feeling the effects from that dose, you can go to bed and try a bit less the next day.

After a few days of trying 15-25mg of CBD, if there is not a noticeable difference, increase to about 25mg to 50mg of CBD.

If after a week or so if there is no difference, increase your dosage incrementally by 5-10mg per week until desired result is achieved.  50mg to 100mg of CBD is the high end of the spectrum, used for more intense symptoms (See Chart 1 below for phases).

For example, in a large case series published online on January 7th of 2019 in The Permanente Journal titled, “Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep” doctors gave patients from 25mg to 175mg of CBD daily.

This study also concluded, “CBD appears to be better tolerated than routine psychiatric medications,” and went on to say, “CBD displays promise as a tool for reducing anxiety in clinical populations…”

Amount of CBD per Product Matters!

These dosing levels are easiest to track/quantify on our Full Spectrum Tinctures.

For example, a full dropper (1ml) of our 3000mg, 30ml Full Spectrum Tincture is 100mg of CBD.

Our 1000mg, 30ml tincture has 33mg of CBD in a full dropper, and our 500mg tincture has about 16mg of CBD in a full dropper. Our 15ml bottles have a different total bottle CBD strength, but each 1ml dropper has the same amount of tincture per dropper full.

See below…

Craft hemp flower and pre-rolls are contingent upon on the strain.

With our strain specific COAs you will find, “Cannabinoids Total” (Click here for COAs).

I will post another blog in the future on reading these third party lab tests to determine CBD dosing.

Dosing is very particular to and dependent on each person.  Finding our sweet spot involves listening to our bodies, as everyone is different and faces different mental/physical challenges.

Hemp products help one’s body achieve a better state of homeostasis, so you may not need to take as much as your friend to notice a difference.  The beauty behind hemp products, is that they can be incorporated in one’s life to help achieve or continue a healthy lifestyle.

‘Til next time Hemp Hustlas!

Love,

Lauren

3 Reasons to Use CBD For High Blood Pressure

How I Overcame Stage 2 Hypertension as a 22 Year Old

How I Got Started – Lowering Stage 2 Hypertension in 3 Months

How many 22-year old’s are talking about blood pressure? Or how many have a blood pressure cuff beside their bed? One in three American adults have high blood pressure, and whether I want to admit it or not, I’m an adult.

Well, at the ripe age of 22, I had Stage 2 Hypertension. My blood pressure was 152/83. According to the American Heart Association, my blood pressure was UP there. And here’s the thing, I felt healthy, ate well, got enough sleep – Maybe my anxiety was a bit high, but enough to have high blood pressure?

I felt lost and defeated. High blood pressure was something I experienced once as a young teen, but it was never serious.  To encounter elevated blood pressure again as a young adult was pretty unnerving.  I went to the doctor multiple times and tried different methods of checking my blood pressure as I hoped it was just a form of “white coat” (Aka, getting nervous at the doctor’s office).

Nope.  Still high.

So, immediately I began researching natural lifestyle changes to slow the roll of my elevated blood pressure. I incorporated more cardio and rest days, apple cider vinegar, yoga etc. (Which I still do).

Here’s the biggie. I began using CBD for high blood pressure daily. A legitimate regimen with dosing and everything.  Since I work in the hemp industry and grow the magical plant, I used hemp and CBD products freely.  Honestly, I hadn’t tracked my usage because a new CBD oil or hemp strain is always around to test (Not complaining, don’t get me wrong). But, after my diagnosis, I was on a mission. I saw it as an opportunity to practice dosing, starting small, finding the sweet spot, and tracking my progress along the way.

Well, it saved my life (See below). Don’t get me wrong, there was no placebo controlled double-blind study, but it personally changed my life.  There are many reasons to use CBD oil, but using it for my blood pressure was literally vital.  Here are three reasons I began following a strict CBD regimen since October 2019 to naturally lower my blood pressure.

These are my monthly blood pressure readings taken from October 2019 to January 2020.

#1 – Decreased Levels of Anxiety and Stress

We may no longer be trying to avoid getting mauled by a bear like our ancestors, but relatively speaking, our daily life can bring a variety of stressful situations.

High-stress conditions can lead to increased blood pressure, and CBD oil has been a game-changer for me in the way of decreasing my anxiety (Not stressing about outrunning a cheetah, but deadlines are pretty stressful too).

CBD is a vasodilator.  According to research gathered by Jack Herer in The Emperor Wears No Clothes, “Cannabis lowers blood pressure, dilates the arteries, and reduces body temperature an average of one-half degree, thereby relieving stress.”

study done in 2019 on adults with anxiety, showed their anxiety decreased relatively rapidly over three months taking CBD oil.  Coming from someone who witnessed my blood pressure and anxiety levels fall drastically over three months, this does not come as a surprise whatsoever.

Public speaking is basically a universally recognized stressor for many, and people who enjoy public speaking are a rare breed (Cue, sweaty armpits). So, another study performed in 2019 tested different CBD dosing levels for an incredibly stress-inducing situation, a public speaking simulation. This study examined different dosing levels and found the group that took an average amount of CBD experienced “anxiolytic-like properties of CBD,” meaning stress levels were noticeably lower.

Summary – Anxiety or stress increase our chances of high blood pressure and multiple studies have indicated CBD can noticeably reduce high-stress levels (Here are some great high CBD strains for anxiety, grown by my family).

#2 – CBD is an Anti-Inflammatory

Existing in an “inflamed” state is relatively common in today’s world. I mean, I am fully aware the processed fries I consumed last night were highly inflammatory, but YOLO.

Sometimes you must feed the bod; sometimes, you must feed the soul.

Studies indicate that inflammation in the body could be a cause of hypertension, aka high blood pressure. Inflammation can cause pain and tension in the body.

So, does CBD help with inflammation in a world of late-night, sodium-laden fries?

According to Healthline, several studies in animals have indicated that “CBD may help reduce the inflammation and cell death associated with heart disease due to its powerful antioxidant and stress-reducing properties.” Furthermore, using CBD oil or cannabis products gets our endocannabinoid system firing. CBD boosts the activity in our endocannabinoid system and interacts with neurotransmitters that help to eliminate inflammation.

What does this mean for us? Less inflammation, aka less pain and reduced chance of high blood pressure!

Summary – Inflammation causes pain in the body and is related to high blood pressure. The anti-inflammatory power of CBD can reduce pain and blood pressure levels.

#3 – A More Natural and Holistic Approach

Whenever I found out I had high blood pressure, I was not looking forward to being reliant on medication.  I don’t know anyone who is looking forward to adding another prescription to their life. So, I immediately turned to natural remedies.

In a large case study done on cannabidiol in anxiety and sleep, CBD is better tolerated than routine psychiatric medicine. Personally, CBD oil has been vital to helping me get to a healthy blood pressure level naturally, and other hypertension patients also use CBD to alleviate high blood pressure naturally.  I am so thankful for the industry I’m in as it has literally saved my life.

Summary – CBD oil is a natural remedy to potentially lower blood pressure and has few to no adverse side effects.

Conclusion – Can CBD oil lower blood pressure? While more research is needed, as with everything, studies indicate CBD oil is a natural way to lower blood pressure. A 2017 study on healthy individuals subjected them to stressful situations. Those who had taken CBD had reduced blood pressure. CBD oil affects blood pressure by lowering stress, reducing inflammation and assisting naturally.

Hemp and Marijuana – Twins or best *buds*?

The misters at our farm (https://www.apphemp.com/) go off on a timer… I was on the receiving end this time.

If it looks like bud… and smells like bud…

Let’s roll out a massive question about hemp – Is it marijuana? The quick and dirty is that hemp is not marijuana, but they are both members of the cannabis family! Within this family, hemp and marijuana are less like twins and more like cousins as they are, “Different varieties of the Cannabis sativa species,” according to Annie Rouse

The main components to consider when comparing the two is CBD and THC. Marijuana is the psychoactive cannabis plant that has high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the psychological effects users feel when they feel a “high” sensation. Hemp, on the other hand, is federally legal and must have less than 0.3% THC, meaning that users reap all the health benefits of the cannabis plant without many psychoactive effects. Cannabidiol (CBD), and other cannabinoids, in hemp are found in high concentrations and seen in lower levels in marijuana.

The easiest way to differentiate between the two is

  • Hemp = Higher CBD, Lower THC
  • Marijuana = Lower CBD, Higher THC
Hemp has less than 0.03% Delta 9 THC (The federally legal limit). Click the link to see my family’s third party lab results showing these legal levels (https://www.apphemp.com/pages/certificate-of-analysis-1).

Cannabinoids are the compounds in hemp that are known to have healing and therapeutic effects. The cannabinoid CBD in hemp is hugely popular as it is used to treat an array of conditions that Dr Matthew Ruiz mentions in the Power Plant Podcast such as anxiety, chronic pain, cancer, PTSD, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s diabetes, cardiovascular disease, antibiotic-resistant infections, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, and more.

CBD is a hot topic right now for its plethora of benefits, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. The National Hemp Association states there could be over 100 cannabinoids that are solely found in this plant and, “Have the unique ability to interact with the human body’s natural cannabinoid receptors.” These other cannabinoids include cannabichromene (CBC), cannabinol (CBN), and cannabigerol (CBG).

As previously mentioned, CBD is federally legal. But, reputable hemp companies and growers, like Appalachian Standard (my family), should also get third party tests performed on the hemp ladies to ensure the plant is below the legal limit of 0.3% Delta 9 THC (See a list of our lab reports here).

I hope this introduction to hemp helped deepen your understanding of this magical plant. Knowledge is power, and Appalachian Standard and I are excited to continue to educate the community and not demonize a truly remarkable plant.

‘Til next time hemp hustlas!

Lauren

From the “Accepted” Path to True Passion – My Blog Intro

My name is Lauren Davis, and I work with cannabis. Cannabis sativa L. to be exact, also known as hemp. A plant that, until 2014 was illegal to grow in the U.S. And because of hemp’s forbidden history, I wasn’t always in this industry… I was going to be an accountant!

First and foremost, I ask you to be kind to yourself. Please listen to that voice that speaks in moments of stillness and directs you towards new, out of the ordinary paths. You know yourself better than anyone, so please trust that voice. It may just be the best decision you’ve ever made.

With that being said, buckle UP. This journey is about to be a EXCITING adventure. My blog is the beginning to my journey of hemp, natural, and healing explorations. Each post will be a new piece of information, that will

  • Shed light on the, currently, convoluted and WILD hemp industry
  • Give you an inside look on hemp farming AND running a hemp business (From someone who has not done the whole farming thing before. Goal = Live off the land one day! Yee.haw.)
  • Provide others motivation and perspective from a girl who was following the “accepted” path (i.e. Education, higher education, the possibility of more debt, and a Corp America giggity gig, when there was a need in my family business in an exponentially growing industry.)
  • Make your soul lighter and heart happier.

I was never immersed in the hemp (and holistic/hippy) industry until about two and a half years ago.  I’m learning more each day, and am by no means an expert. But are we ever?

I graduated from Western Carolina University with a 4.0 and honors and earned two degrees, one in Accounting, and the other in Finance. The only B I got was in middle school band, if that gives you an idea as to how determined I was to excel on this pre-determined path (Don’t worry, we can talk about mental health and hemp usage soon).

Here’s the curveball…

I was graciously offered an opportunity with a Big Four accounting firm, for which I am eternally thankful, but felt a higher calling to follow my heart and work with my family (*Cue, “Uh oh… One of those,” comments*). With that, I am endlessly grateful for those who knew me best and did not sweat a single thing.  Some questioned my decision claiming I was going to, “Under-utilize my skill.”  I heard them, made many pros and cons lists and spoke with mentors.  I am proud to say this path utilizes ALL of my skills to the fullest.  I want to share this blog and what I learn with you all because it is unlike anything I have learned or experienced.  We are making history.

Immersed with healers, growers, leaders, and, sadly, some scoundrels, the hemp industry is a full on, beautiful learning experience. I want to share my experience with you because I, and we, have never been in a time like the present. Not only is history-changing, but we are too.

After we pass, our soul takes our experiences and tools on to the next place. My goal is to “fill my toolbelt” with new tools and findings from

  • Makers of LIFE who have worked in a greenhouse for most of their lives (One specifically for 45 years)
  • Healers who take pride in finding naturally medicinal methods
  • Cultivators of one of the few plant’s that has evolved with humans (HEMP)
  • Many other “woke” individuals who I meet in the industry (Plus Asheville is a mecca for these souls)

I hope you are excited to fill yours as well.  Life is too short to not take the path less traveled. Please don’t wonder what if.

Let’s.

GOOOOOO.

Love,

Lauren
